Two days. That is the number for most people. One day covers the temple and one beach if you start early. Two days adds St Mary's Island and Kaup. Three days lets you reach the Western Ghats or Kollur without cutting the coast short.
If you are only here for darshan at the Sri Krishna Matha, you can arrive and leave in a morning. That is why published answers to this question vary so wildly. People are answering different trips.
Is 1 day enough for Udupi?
Yes, for the town. No, if you also want the coast properly.
What fits in one day
Early morning. Sri Krishna Matha at first light, before the queue builds. Darshan here is through the Kanakana Kindi, the nine-holed silver window, rather than a direct view of the idol. The Matha is quietest between roughly 5 and 7 am.
Mid morning. Anantheshwara and Chandramouleshwara temples, both a short walk from the Matha on the same square.
Lunch. Car Street, or the free anna prasada served inside the Matha on a banana leaf.
Afternoon and evening. Malpe Beach, 6 km west. Sunset from the shore.
That is a full, unhurried day and a good one.
What you will miss
St Mary's Island. Needs the ferry from Malpe Jetty and about half a day. Boats run in daylight only and stop in the early afternoon, so it cannot be bolted onto a late start.
Kaup Beach and lighthouse. 15 km south, a separate half day.
Maravanthe, Kollur, Agumbe. Each is its own outing.
Verdict: one day works if Udupi is a stop on a longer coastal drive. It does not work as a destination trip.
Are 2 days enough for Udupi?
Yes. This is the right length for Udupi town and its coast, and it is what most people should book.

Where two days runs short
Kollur Mookambika is about 80 km north. Agumbe, Maravanthe and the Ghat waterfalls are each a separate outing. None of them are add-ons to a packed two-day plan. If someone tells you they did Udupi, Kollur and Agumbe in two days, they spent most of it in a car.
One caveat that changes the maths
Between roughly mid May and mid September, the Udupi district administration suspends boat services, water sports and access to St Mary's Island under Harbour Craft Rules. In that window, day two loses its main event. Two days becomes generous rather than tight, and you should either shorten the trip or spend the second day inland.
Is 3 days enough for Udupi?
Three days is comfortable. It is the point where the trip stops feeling like a checklist.
A workable three days
Day 1. Krishna Matha at dawn, the two neighbouring temples, Car Street, Malpe Beach in the evening.
Day 2. St Mary's Island ferry in the morning, Kaup Beach and lighthouse in the afternoon.
Day 3. Pick one:
Agumbe and its waterfalls, 55 km east in the Western Ghats
Kollur Mookambika, about 80 km north, with Maravanthe Beach on the way back
Bengre and Kemmannu, the backwater villages, if you would rather slow down than drive
What three days still will not cover
Kudremukh trekking, Gokarna, or a proper run of Yakshagana performances. Those need four days or more.
Two things that shape a three-day plan
Trek permits are now mandatory and cannot be bought on the day. Karnataka Forest Department treks are booked through the Aranya Vihaara portal, in the trekker's own name, with the same government ID presented at the trailhead. Daily numbers are capped. Kudremukh Peak allows 50 trekkers a day and weekend slots go in minutes. Spot booking does not exist. Any older blog telling you to turn up at the trailhead is out of date.
The temple's rhythm depends on the Paryaya cycle. Shiroor Matha took charge of the Sri Krishna Matha on 18 January 2026 and holds the term until 18 January 2028. Handover years fill every room in town in January.
How much time is required to visit Udupi?

How to plan an Udupi trip
Work backwards from two things: the season, and whether St Mary's Island matters to you.
1. Pick the window
November to February is the reliable stretch. October is fine and quieter. March to May runs hot, 35°C to 40°C and humid. Mid May to mid September the island and water sports are shut. Full detail in our best time to visit Udupi guide.
2. Decide the length
Use the table above. For most people the answer is two days.
3. Get there
Nearest airport is Mangaluru International (IXE), about 60 km south. Udupi railway station (UD) is on the Konkan line, 3 km from town. NH 66 runs through. See how to reach Udupi.
4. Book the fixed points first
Two things do not flex around your schedule:
The ferry. Daylight only, stops early afternoon, and suspended mid May to mid September.
Trek permits. Advance booking through Aranya Vihaara, capped daily quota, compulsory guide.
Everything else can move. These cannot.
5. Choose a base

6. Check January before you book it
The Paryaya ceremony fills the town. Next handover is 18 January 2028.
Which place is best for a 2-day trip in Karnataka?
Worth answering honestly, because the answer depends entirely on where you start. A two-day trip is really a question about drive time.
From Bengaluru: Mysuru and Srirangapatna (145 km), Chikkamagaluru (240 km), or Coorg (250 km). Udupi at roughly 400 km is a stretch inside two days. It works better as three.
From Mangaluru or the coast: Udupi and Malpe is the obvious pick. Gokarna is 240 km north.
From Hubballi and north Karnataka: Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal (105 km), or Hampi (145 km, though Hampi deserves three days).
If you are really asking about Udupi: two days is enough once you are on the coast, and not enough if the drive from Bengaluru sits inside those two days. Fly or take an overnight bus, and your two days start on arrival rather than in a car on the Shiradi Ghat.
