Homestays in Bengre, Udupi

Bengre is a narrow strip of land north of Udupi with the Arabian Sea on one side and the backwaters on the other. It is barely wide enough for a road and a row of houses, which is exactly why it stays quiet. There is no through traffic, no resort strip, and no reason for anyone to come here unless they meant to.

That makes it the best part of the Udupi coast for people who want the sea without the crowd. The beach is not a drive or a walk from most of our properties. It is directly outside the door.

The defining feature is the water on both sides. You get the open sea to the west and the calmer backwaters behind you, and the point where the river meets the sea sits about two kilometres away. That confluence is one of the quieter stretches of water on the whole Karnataka coast, and most visitors never think to look for it.

Evenings here are the reason people come back. The sea is loud enough to hear from inside, the light goes orange for about forty minutes, and then it gets genuinely dark. On clear nights the stars are the kind you do not see from a town.

If you want beach shacks and rented jet skis, Bengre is the wrong choice and Malpe is the right one.

We list three properties here and they suit different trips.

Two are family-run homes where the hosts live on the property and cook for guests on request. One is a pair of independent 2BHK houses that can be booked separately or together, which works for a couple or for an extended family sharing.

Between them you can get a sea view balcony, a room built with a glass ceiling for watching the stars from bed, or rooms positioned to catch both the sea and the river at once. That last combination is genuinely rare on this coast.

All three have a full kitchen, WiFi and air conditioning. Local markets nearby carry fresh seafood and vegetables if you want to cook, and every host here will arrange home-cooked coastal Karnataka food if you would rather not.

Udupi town and the Sri Krishna Matha are a short drive inland. Malpe beach and the St Mary’s Islands ferry are close enough for a half-day trip without moving your base. If you want the temple in the morning and an empty beach in the afternoon, Bengre works well as the place you come back to.
