Book homestays and serviced apartments in Santhekatte, Udupi. The practical base near town, with rooms for couples, dorm beds for solo travellers and whole apartments.
Santhekatte is the practical choice. It sits close to Udupi town rather than on the coast, which puts the Krishna Matha, the bus stand and the road out of the district all within easy reach, with Malpe beach a short drive west.
If your trip involves more than lying on a beach, this is where to base yourself. It is also the best value area we list, and the only one with dormitory beds.
This is a residential part of Udupi rather than a scenic one. You are staying among people who live here, in apartments and houses on ordinary streets, close to shops that are open when you need them.
That practicality is the point. You can get to the temple early, drive out to a beach for the afternoon, and come back without a long journey in either direction. For anyone splitting time between the town, the coast, and onward travel, the maths works out better here than anywhere else on our list.
What you give up is the view. There is no sea outside the window and no river out front. If that is what you came for, Bengre or Kemmannu will serve you better.
Two properties, and between them they cover most kinds of traveller.
One is a fully furnished 2BHK apartment run by a host who keeps it immaculate: working appliances, a kitchen you will actually want to cook in, air conditioning, hot water, washing machine, WiFi and parking. It suits a couple for a weekend or a family settling in for a week.
The other is a newer property with genuinely flexible options: private rooms for couples, large dormitories for backpackers and solo travellers, and the full 2BHK for a group that wants the whole house. Food is available on request. It is one of the few places in Udupi set up properly for solo travel on a budget.
Udupi town and the Sri Krishna Matha are minutes away. Malpe beach and the St Mary’s Islands ferry point are a short drive west, and the quieter stretches of coast at Bengre are comfortably reachable for a day.
The same coastal calendar applies: October to March for the best weather, June to September for heavy monsoon and lower prices. Being inland, Santhekatte is a more comfortable monsoon base than the exposed coastal properties, since you are not dependent on the sea being calm enough to enjoy.
August brings Krishna Janmashtami at the Matha, the biggest event of the year here, and Santhekatte is the closest of our areas to it.
Full month by month detail is on the coastal planner.
