Staying in Udupi
Udupi is a temple town on the Karnataka coast with about thirty kilometres of shoreline attached to it. Most people arrive for the Sri Krishna Matha, stay one night, and leave without seeing the coast at all. That is the mistake.
The beaches here are not the ones you have seen in photographs of Goa. They are wider, quieter, and largely empty outside of weekends. The Suvarna and Swarna rivers meet the Arabian Sea within a few kilometres of town, and those confluences are among the most peaceful stretches of water on the west coast.
We list homestays rather than hotels because the difference matters here. Most of our properties are whole houses. You get the entire place, a kitchen you can actually cook in, and a host who lives nearby rather than a front desk. Several of our hosts cook for guests on request, which is how most people end up eating proper Tulunad food rather than restaurant approximations of it.

Where to stay
Bengre
A narrow strip of land between the sea and the backwaters, north of the harbour. Bengre is the closest thing Udupi has to a secret. Sea on one side, river on the other, and almost no through traffic. Our three properties here sit within walking distance of the water, and the river meets the sea about two kilometres away. Good for couples and for anyone who wants the coast without a crowd.
Kemmannu
Inland from the coast on the Suvarna River, about ten minutes from the beach. Kemmannu is known locally for its hanging bridge and for the peacocks that wander the surrounding fields. Our two properties here are full houses on the river, both with the kind of balcony you end up spending the whole evening on. This is the quieter, greener option.
Santhekatte
The practical choice. Santhekatte sits closer to town, which makes it the easiest base if you are splitting your time between the temple, the beaches, and getting somewhere else afterwards. Our properties here range from private couple rooms to dormitory beds, so it also works if you are travelling alone or on a tight budget.
Kodavoor and Malpe
Malpe is the main beach and the ferry point for St Mary’s Islands. Our property in Kodavoor sits back from the busiest stretch, which means you get the beach access without the noise that comes with it.
Gujjarabettu, Kadike and Kelanajaru
Three smaller pockets, one property each, all within a short distance of the water. Gujjarabettu is two hundred metres from the beach. Kadike is close to both Malpe and Sasare beaches without the crowds of either. These are the budget-friendly end of our list and the rooms are considerably better than the price suggests.
Best time to visit
The coast runs on two seasons and they are not subtle.
October to Marchis when most people should come. The sea is calm, the days are warm and dry, and the ferries to St Mary’s Islands run from October through late May. Kayaking through the Suvarna backwaters runs on roughly the same calendar. This is also festival season: Kambala buffalo racing from November, Yakshagana performances through the winter, and the Rathotsava chariot festival at the Krishna Matha in January.
June to September is monsoon. The rain is heavy and constant, waterfalls run hard, and the whole coast turns an aggressive green. It is genuinely beautiful and considerably cheaper. Two things to plan around: the state fishing ban runs from June into July, so fresh catch is off the menu, and swimming is not advisable when the sea is rough.
Krishna Janmashtami in August is the biggest event at the Matha and worth timing a trip around if you do not mind the rain.

Common questions
- Where is the best area to stay in Udupi?
- It depends what you came for. Bengre if you want the coast and quiet. Kemmannu if you want the river and greenery. Santhekatte if you want to be close to town and the temple. Malpe if the beach is the main event.
- Is a homestay better than a hotel in Udupi?
- For most trips, yes. Our properties are mostly whole houses, so you get a kitchen, more space, and privacy for less than an equivalent hotel room. The trade-off is that there is no room service and no front desk at three in the morning.
- How far are the beaches?
- Most of our properties are within two to fifteen minutes of a beach. The closest, in Gujjarabettu, is two hundred metres from the water.
- Can I get home-cooked food?
- At several properties, yes. A number of our hosts cook for guests on request, usually on a menu basis agreed the day before. It is the single best thing about staying in a homestay here.
- What are the check-in and check-out times?
- Check-in is usually from 12 noon and check-out is 11am. If you need to arrive earlier or leave later, tell us when you book. Early check-in and early check-out can normally be arranged, and a late check-out may carry a charge depending on the schedule.
